Drop It!
Tips For A Peaceful Trade-Off

Your dog 🐶 scoops up something they shouldn’t, and suddenly it’s a showdown. They’re gripping it like it’s the last treat on Earth. What now?

First, don’t panic - and definitely don’t yank or yell. That usually makes them bite down harder or think you’re playing.

Instead, try this: grab a high-value treat (think 🧀 cheese, hot dog, or leftover chicken) and hold it near their nose. Calmly say “drop it.” Most pups can’t resist the upgrade.

If it’s an emergency (like they snagged something ☠️ toxic), you can try gently opening their mouth. One hand holds the upper jaw - the other lifts the bottom or presses lightly at the base of the tongue. Only do this if you know your dog won’t bite.

Best tip? Teach “drop it” before you need it. Practice with safe objects and good rewards so when it really counts, you’re ready.

Broward County Animal Care is hosting a Free/Low Cost Pet Wellness Clinic this Friday, May 2nd. Free DAPP vaccines for dogs, free FVRCP vaccines for cats, and free microchipping for all pets are available. Rabies vaccinations and Registration Tags will also be offered for $25-$35.
